RURAL NORTH FLORIDA: A Step Back in Time
Monticello and Jefferson County
By Hines Boyd
When Florida became a U.S. territory in the 1820s, Jefferson County, on the Georgia border, was
among the early areas to be settled. Farmers and planters came for its rich soils and favorable
climate. The small town of Monticello grew into a commercial center where county residents
could find the supplies and services they needed for their farms and homes.
Much of that rural character remains today. Monticello still serves the surrounding countryside,
providing the everyday supplies and services that a small community needs. Over the years,
railroads and, later, major highways bypassed the town as central and south Florida experienced
tremendous population growth. Monticello, meanwhile, retained much of the charm and
character that make it distinctive.
Jefferson County has long been known for its unhurried pace of life. The traffic circle around
Monticello’s landmark courthouse remains a familiar center of town activity. Local merchants
and professionals continue to serve residents from town and the surrounding countryside. And
despite its location just east of metropolitan Tallahassee, Florida’s state capital, Jefferson County
remains distinctly rural.
Community leaders recognize that this little-known corner of Florida will attract more attention
as people look for alternatives to urban and suburban living. They are working to plan for the
future while preserving the qualities that make this place special.
Perhaps you’ve thought about a lifestyle change like this yourself. If you’re considering a move
to a smaller community, or simply curious about what life in rural North Florida might offer,
plan a visit. Our United Country Real Estate office is just two blocks south of the Courthouse
Circle on US 19 in downtown Monticello.
We love meeting and even touring the town with visitors who appreciate the charm and
uniqueness of our community. We enjoy sharing what we know, answering questions, and
helping our guests explore the possibilities. That’s what keeps our work fun and rewarding.
So when we say, "Give us a call,"  we mean it!
